LeBron James set to Produce basketball film on Netflix starring Adam Sandler
LeBron James has a long career in the NBA and is now taking his chances in the film industry as well. In addition to starring Space Jam: The New Legacy, the Los Angeles Lakers star will now produce Hustle, an original Netflix movie about basketball and starring Adam Sandler, a big fan of the sport.
According to information from the Collider, Hustle “follows the story of a basketball scout (Sandler) who is unfairly dismissed after discovering a player abroad. The scout decides to take the player to the USA to prove that they both have what it takes to reach the NBA.”
The direction is in the hands of Jeremiah Zagar, whose first fiction feature was the indie hit We the Animals, winner of the 2018 NEXT Innovator Award at the Sundance Festival in 2018. The script was written by Taylor Materne, who scripted the NBA 2K20 game, and Will Fetters, from A Star, Is Born. LeBron James will do the production alongside Maverick Carter, one of the producers of Space Jam: The New Legacy.
Collider’s Jeff Sneider has been following Hustle’s development since October 2019 and, although the nationality of the player discovered by the scout has not been disclosed, there is a possibility that it has something to do with China since the original script tells the story of a Chinese street basketball player who goes to Los Angeles and his success brings him closer to the NBA.
The relationship with China, here, goes far beyond the common Hollywood strategy to add some Chinese cast to the productions as a way to increase the box office there, since the Asian country does not always receive major world premieres. Sneider recalls that China refused to show NBA games after controversial comments (from a Chinese point of view) that even involved LeBron James himself. Hustle still doesn’t have a premiere date, but more information should come soon.
